SUCCESSFUL JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN LOCAL GOVERNMENT
AND BUSHMANS KLOOF TO BOOST TOURISM AND
IMPROVE COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE

In a novel approach to a pioneering constructive engagement between business and government, the owners of Bushmans Kloof have committed to a multi-million Rand joint venture with local government and other land owners, to tar the 34km gravel road between Clanwilliam and the lodge.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat is an award-winning luxury ecological retreat within the 7500 hectare reserve, set at the foothills of the Cederberg Mountains.

The tarred road will stretch as far as the historical site of the ‘Englishman’s Grave’, on the periphery of the property, and once completed, will serve both the tourism sector and the local community of the Cederberg Wilderness area. The project, which is set to be completed by the end of 2009, is making excellent progress, and already some 25km of the 34km between Clanwilliam, via the Pakhuis Pass to the lodge has been tarred.

Providing a much safer and smoother drive to local residents and visitors alike, the tarring of the road will be of substantial benefit to the community at large. With the advancement in infrastructure, this will improve access to the area, and both further enhance the future of tourism in the area. The significant investment by Bushmans Kloof in this innovative, collaborative initiative is reflective of its dedication and commitment to both sustainable tourism and conservation.

Bushmans Kloof was featured in the global spotlight twice recently, with the announcement that it was named Global Winner of Wildlife Conservations Programs in their prestigious World Savers Awards 2009, shortly after it was voted ‘Best Hotel in the World’ (2009 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards Readers’ Survey), with Condé Nast Traveler.

Graham Kennedy, the General Manager of Bushmans Kloof says that the timing of the road upgrade has been fortuitous as it’s expected that the international accolades will, over the next few months and years, lead to an influx of local and international visitors, unlike ever seen before in this area. ‘We are already seeing the incredible power and value of international media exposure, and we are receiving enquiries from overseas on a daily basis – a trend which we’re expecting to continue in the lead up to, and after the 2010 Soccer World Cup Tournament. We are therefore very pleased that the new road will offer much improved access for visitors to the lodge.

At the same time, it has always been an integral part of the Bushmans Kloof ethos to work together with, and support our local community. This we do in many ways, with initiatives that range from job creation and conservation education, to leadership development in the local Elizabethfontein School. We are therefore proud to be part of this example of government and private sector partnerships that really work, to benefit all concerned’, he concluded.

Located at the foothills of the breathtaking Cederberg Mountains, just 270 kms from Cape Town, Bushmans Kloof is a conservation success story, and a safe haven for abundant indigenous flora and fauna. It is custodian of one of the world’s largest open-air rock art galleries, and is recognized as an SA Natural Heritage site for its immense historical and botanical significance. It offers majestic views, invigorating outdoor activities, luxurious accommodation, award-winning cuisine and a holistic wellness experience deeply rooted in nature, all combining to create an unforgettable, luxury wilderness adventure.
