Elaine van der Westhuyzen: Spa Manager

Spa Manager Elaine van der Westhuyzen is the driving force behind the Bushmans Kloof Spa. The impeccable service and expertise offered by Elaine and her team led to The Spa at Bushmans Kloof securing the coveted Silver Sage Readers Choice Awards 2009 in the category of Favorite Resort/Hotel Spa 2009 - Africa/Middle East.

Highly qualified and experienced, Elaine has her finger on the pulse of global wellness and spa developments, and her guidance has been vital to this latest upgrade and enhancement of the Spa facilities.

In recognition of her dedication and service excellence, Elaine recently travelled to London to receive an award for ‘Outstanding Performance’ from the owners of Bushmans Kloof, the Tollman family.

Her wellness philosophy is simple, though profound, and echoes the very ethos of Bushmans Kloof. ‘We nourish the soul when we find value in the stillness of the moment, connect with nature and recognize that now is the only time that there really is. Let nature touch our soul’.

Evidence recorded on camera at Bushmans Kloof of a female leopard with her cub, has been cited as ‘rare’ according to Quinton Martins, who heads up the Cape Leopard Project, one of the major conservation projects supported by the Lodge. ‘It is only the second female to be recorded on camera in the reserve and it seems that this new female (named #F12), has territorially displaced #F9 (Amber) who was resident in the area, Martins says. The camera was subsequently moved to a new site to gain photographic evidence of where Amber might be.

Leopard cubs are usually weaned at the age of six to seven months, but can stay with the mother till twelve or eighteen months before having to leave the mother’s territory. Cub survival for leopards anywhere is low, but is probably even lower in the Cederberg because of the harsh environment. Feeding on small antelope, as well as small mammals such as mongoose, birds, dassies and large rodents, leopards are highly adaptable animals - they avoid human contact at all costs, therefore posing no threat whatsoever to people.

The 10th annual Clanwilliam Cedar Tree event at Heuningvlei in the Cederberg Wilderness area on Saturday 22 May 2010 was a significant occasion for all who attended.

The endemic Clanwilliam cedar tree occurs only in the Cederberg mountains, some 250km north of Cape Town, and it represents one of 1 000 surviving conifer species in the world. The species is categorised as endangered on the Red Data List as it is facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. To date the project has initiated the planting of more than 500 cedar trees in the Cederberg area.

Members of the Bushmans Kloof team along with Rika Du Plessis, Conservation Manager at Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve, Cape Nature and community members of Heuningvlei, as well as children of the local Elizabethfontein Primary School and other schools from the area, participated in a fun-filled day at Heuningvlei, which culminated in the planting of mature seedlings in the grove and the surrounding wilderness area. Some 800 new cedar seeds were transported to Bushmans Kloof, where they will be nurtured in the nursery until they have reached a growth stage where they can be transplanted safely back into the wilderness.

We know that each small action we take towards reducing our carbon footprint is a step in the right direction, and applaud Adele Coetzee, our Horticultural Supervisor for her latest endeavour. Adele has started a worm garden, with the idea of growing it to generate enough compost to make Bushmans Kloof self sustainable as far as garden compost is concerned. We are amazed that these small creatures effectively convert organic waste directly into compost, using a process known as vermiculture or vermicomposting to make a rich organic fertilizer for our exquisite gardens.

Chef Floris Smith’s most recent venture is a series of wine training sessions for staff at Bushmans Kloof, the idea being to broaden the knowledge of his colleagues regarding the extensive wine list we offer our guests. He also admits to a personal desire to cultivate an appreciation of good wine among his fellows.

Listening to Floris advocating the virtues of our wines, one is hard-pressed not to become an instant wine aficionado. His weekly one-hour lectures are eagerly attended by staff at the lodge, from the housekeeping ladies to our gardeners and guides, who are keen to expand their knowledge of food and wine pairing and to become familiar with the different wine varietals cultivated in the region and beyond. True to his nurturing nature, his wine training sessions also include invaluable guidelines of the dangers of alcohol abuse within the community.
