BUSHMANS KLOOF ARCHAEOLOGIST
UNCOVERS SECRETS OF THE ANCIENT BUSHMAN
For the past two years, Bushmans Kloof resident archaeologist, Siyakha Mguni has dedicated his time to the most significant heritage project that Bushmans Kloof has ever undertaken. He is in the process of recording, documenting and researching all of the known rock art sites, as well as potential new sites on the reserve, to create a database linked to a Geographic Information System (GIS). This database will culminate in an integrated Rock Art Management Plan that can be used as an example in the Cederberg region.

A passionate Mguni confirmed that a total of 122 sites have been documented to date, and there is reason to believe that there may be over 150 sites on the reserve, which verifies Bushmans Kloof’s status as one of the world’s largest open-air Bushman rock art galleries.

Ever the innovator, Siyakha Mguni joined forces with Edward Eastwood (author of ‘Capturing the Spoor’ - a book about rock art in the Limpopo Province, South Africa) and author Dawn Green in April this year, to begin a project to study a range of these themed items on the reserve in order to identify their central characteristics and meaning. Results of this study are expected to be published before the end of this year, and will be on display in the Bushmans Kloof Heritage Centre for guests who are intrigued by this aesthetic paradigm of the Bushman culture.
