CAPE MOUNTAIN LEOPARD TRACKING

1 2 2

The Cape Leopard Trust aims to facilitate conservation of the Cape's predator diversity by implementing conservation strategies, research projects and tourism initiatives.

Quinton Martins is the project manager and one of the principal researchers of the Cape Leopard Trust, whose current work includes research projects involving leopards in South Africa and a conservation genetics project of the South African leopard populations. One aim of this study is to determine whether the leopards of the Western Cape region should be considered as a unique genetic unit – a group of small leopards weighing up to half that of their northern cousins.

The leopard population has suffered severe losses in the Cape and is now extinct in many areas of the province where it formerly occurred. The species is regularly removed from farms with little knowledge of population or genetic status.

Join Quinton and Elizabeth Martins at Bushmans Kloof as they discuss this intriguing animal, and their work in ensuring its continued survival.
