Bushmans Kloof is the ideal place to set off on an adventure with the kids. The hotel arranges Jeep safaris through the surrounding unbridled wilderness and is stocked with a range of mountain bikes of all sizes for guests to explore endless bush trail labyrinths. Here are just five of the many outdoor activities to experience in the Cederberg Mountains.

Cederberg Mountains

Mountain biking

One of the best ways to explore the fynbos and the Cederberg’s vast, open expanses is behind the handlebar of a mountain bike. Don’t set off without your kit—a backpack filled with trail snacks, water and maps provided by our concierge. Bushmans Kloof is within easy access of innumerable picturesque routes to suit all abilities and ages. Whether your teens are looking for a wild and rocky challenge or you have young children in tow, there’s a two-wheeled adventure to suit, and a personal guide that can be arranged on request.

Star gazing

The night sky in the Cederberg Mountains is breath-taking, with plenty to inspire budding astronomers. With no light pollution, there’s no better place for star-gazing in South Africa. Located in a remote corner of the wilderness, Cederberg Astronomical Observatory opens its doors to the public on Saturday nights. Gaze up at the vast Milky Way and seek out faraway galaxies through a professional telescope. Comets, nebulae and globular clusters are often observed, and spotting one makes for a very memorable evening.

Wildlife watching

Be it from the comfort of a private jeep or on a trek through the bush on foot, allow us to organise a nature excursion for you and the kids. Witnessing the beautiful wild creatures that inhabit the Cederberg, including ostriches, Cape foxes, baboons, lynxes, bonteboks, hartebeest and rheboks, are the makings of precious memories. The rare and secretive Cape leopard is a lucky spot, while Bushmans Kloof is home to one of the largest private herds of Cape mountain zebra.

Canoeing and swimming

The tributaries that spill from the Olifants River flow through the reserve at Bushmans Kloof, cutting through the sandstone and creating crystal-clear pools. Canoes are available to hire, inviting the whole family to paddle out across the glassy waters and explore the area’s ancient rock formations and striking scenery. As the day wears on and the sun gets stronger, jump in with a refreshing splash.

Cederberg Mountains

Tree swinging

A heart-pumping adventure awaits young Tarzans with a zipline through the mountains. This route consists of eight zipslides, which join together to make up a high-flying, 1.4km airborne course. Don a safety harness and glide between rock formations over the Western Cape’s majestic wilderness—the perfect backdrop for a pulse-raising family day out.
