Bushmans Kloof

Surrounded by the majestic Cederberg Mountains, with a natural habitat that’s rich in flora, fauna and wildlife, a trip to Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat is quite unlike any other. Spend a few days at the hotel and you can expect to see over 130 examples of ancient Bushman rock art, discover the delights of fynbos on a guided walk, swim or canoe in one of the crystalline sandstone pools or simply relax and unwind as you take in the stunning scenery. Here are some of the essential items to pack in your suitcase to make the most of your stay at Bushmans Kloof.

A Camera and Extra Memory Cards

It goes without saying that remembering to pack a camera is a priority for any traveller, but when you’re visiting a 7,500 hectare nature reserve and South African Natural Heritage site, it’s essential. Whether it’s the ancient and unique rock art or a herd of grazing Cape Mountain Zebra, you’ll certainly want to capture these special moments.

What to Pack

Pack for a Purpose

It’s worth saving some space in your luggage to contribute to Pack for a Purpose, a global social responsibility project that’s supported by Bushmans Kloof. In order to help out, guests simply spare a little room for their suitcase for small items, such as pencils, band-aid plasters or deflated soccer balls, that could make a big difference to local communities in need.

What to Pack

Notebook and a Pen

You never know when creative inspiration might strike, especially when you’re surrounded by 10,000-year-old rock art. These ancient and distinctive depictions were made by Bushman tribes, who used oxide pigment to paint cultural and spiritual motifs. Head out on a rock art excursion before visiting the Heritage Centre, which showcases more Bushman artefacts such as jewellery and hunting objects. What’s more, the stunning variety of flora and fauna that make up the fynbos might also have you reaching for a sketchpad.

What to Pack

Walking Boots

One of the best ways to explore the reserve is on foot, so be sure to pack comfortable clothing and some trusty walking shoes. Enjoy guided walks that offer a detailed insight into many aspects of the nature reserve, from bird watching to botany and an organic garden tour.

What to Pack

Bushmans Kloof abounds with opportunities to get active, so it’s best to pack adventure appropriate clothing. Explore the fynbos for yourself by hiking or biking. The hotel happily provides backpacks full of tasty treats as well as maps and other helpful items.  We recommend taking a picnic along the Crystal Pools Trail, which ends up at a naturally formed crystal clear pool – ideal for a cooling dip. There’s also the opportunity to enjoy canoeing, fly-fishing and archery and croquet.

 A Good Book

With its rich heritage, stunning landscape and fantastic wildlife, there’s plenty to do at Bushmans Kloof, but guests are also encouraged to unwind and de-stress whilst staying at the lodge. Take time for yourself, relax with a good book in the gardens or by the pool, or treat yourself to a soothing spa treatment such as the signature massage, which combines Swedish and deep tissue massage with reflexology.

What to Pack

After a long day exploring or relaxing, sample the best Cape produce and excellent local Bouchard Finlayson wine at The Homestead restaurant at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat.
